What Are Rugged Ratings?

Rugged Android Smartphones

Not all rugged devices are made the same. A true rugged smartphone should be able to demonstrate its durability not only in laboratories but more importantly in the field. Rugged devices are tested to determine their “ruggedness”. Currently, there are two testing methods available, the MIL-STD-810: Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests and the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system.

  • MIL-STD-810 – For any device to be considered MIL-STD-810 compliant, it will have to endure tests designed by the US military. The tests will measure tolerance under harsh settings from temperature to drops. The tests are extensive and cover a wide range of situations and conditions.
  • IP Rating – The International Protection ratings, is an international standard of EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992). The standard is used to determine the levels of sealing effectiveness of an electrical device versus foreign materials. For example, water, dirt, dust, and moisture, which cause damage to internal parts.

A rugged device must have a minimum of at least IP 54 in order to be considered fully-rugged. Therefore, devices with IP54 or higher will be able to endure exposure to moisture, water, dust or dirt. Nevertheless, in specific industries like manufacturing, mining, warehouse, engineering or construction, a higher IP rating will be more beneficial.

According to the International Electrotechnical Commission, a device with an IP65 rating and above should be able to completely endure water, dirt, and dust. In addition, it should be able to survive being exposed to low impact water pressure for up to 15 minutes. Lastly, these devices will also be able to withstand even when dropped up to a meter. In fields where environments can be unpredictable, a rugged device with an IP67 rating or higher may be ideal.

Rugged Android Smartphones Versus Rugged Windows Handhelds

Thousands of companies around the world rely on Windows operating systems to run their operations. However, Android is increasingly becoming a good choice too. Rugged Android Smartphones

Rugged Android smartphones are another huge consideration for companies around the world. The android operating system was originally developed for regular consumer use. As a result, Android enjoys more than three million users today. Using rugged Android smartphones for your business operations means you don’t have to worry about extensive training for your team. Android devices are also extremely flexible users can include several applications which can be stored in the device or a cloud.

In addition, Android devices are optimised to perform for mobile use. Even when using multiple applications, these rugged Android smartphones can continue running on a single charge. We take a closer look at why Android devices are a great choice for any type of business.

Rugged Android Smartphone Features

Ruggedness and water resistance

Devices used in the field or the workplace are prone to several damages. For example, maybe dropped on a hard floor, exposed to dust and liquid, continuously used even in high-temperature areas and more. As a result, using rugged Android devices will allow businesses to continue working without worrying about damage.

Devices with an IP65 rating or higher are considered fully-rugged. The 6 in an IP68 rated device means it can withstand dust ingress. In the meantime, the 8 means the phone is protected versus water even when immersed at a certain depth. This is even when the device has multiple openings such as a charging jack, USB ports, and headphone jacks.

Rugged devices and IP Ratings can help with mission critical communications

Long-term effects of device downtime

Consistent device downtime can lead to significant losses for businesses, with short-term effects potentially snowballing into larger, persistent issues. For instance, the loss of software or applications can prevent effective communication and data updates for your team, while data loss can result in regulatory penalties. Additionally, device downtime can lead to poor customer satisfaction and the potential loss of customers. To avoid these issues, it is important to maintain a stable infrastructure, and using reliable rugged Android devices can help. Rugged devices are designed to withstand extreme temperatures, exposure to water and dust, and other potential issues.

Total Cost of Ownership: Buying A Commercial Android Device for Your Business

In this example, we will explore the potential benefits and issues of purchasing a commercial Android device for your business. To accurately assess the total cost of ownership, you should compare devices based on factors such as the expected cost of negotiations and discounts, financing, depreciation, fees and taxes, repairs, maintenance, and downtime.

At first glance, a regular Android device may seem like the more affordable option for your business. However, after evaluating the total cost of ownership, a rugged Android device is a wiser investment. The indirect costs associated with using a regular commercial device in a business operation can quickly add up. Commercial devices may require more repairs and maintenance, resulting in increased costs over time.

Over the long term, these expenses, combined with potential downtime, can end up costing your business more. While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper commercial Android devices, a rugged Android device can last longer, require less maintenance, and support a variety of needs for your operations.

Total Cost of Ownership Meaning

Leverage With A Rugged Device

The concept of the total cost of ownership (TCO) is to assess not just the purchase price of an asset or device, but also the costs associated with operating it. This includes factors such as maintenance, repairs, depreciation, financing, fees, taxes, and downtime. TCO is an important consideration for both individuals and businesses when making purchasing decisions. The term originated in the 1980s when companies started to examine the costs associated with acquiring software and hardware. Today, TCO analysis is still widely used by businesses to make informed decisions and manage expenses.

Choosing Between A Rugged Phone Vs Commercial Device

Choosing between rugged and commercial devices can be a difficult decision for businesses. Although commercial devices may appear to be a more affordable option, they may not be able to endure the demands of a tough work environment, which can lead to costly downtime and repair expenses. Rugged devices, on the other hand, are specifically designed to withstand harsh conditions such as extreme temperatures, water and dust ingress.

In the long term, rugged devices can assist businesses in reducing device replacement, maintenance, and repair expenses, resulting in cost savings. Rugged devices have a longer lifespan compared to commercial devices, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Furthermore, rugged devices often have unique features such as being drop-proof, which reduces the risk of device damage and repair expenses.

Another factor to consider is the cost of accessories and peripherals. Rugged devices frequently include features such as wireless charging, removable battery, expandable storage, and a durable rear camera with toughened glass protection. These features are essential for businesses that rely on their devices to capture and store important data.

Although rugged devices may have a higher initial cost than commercial devices, they offer substantial cost savings in the long run by reducing device replacement, maintenance, and repair expenses. So what is Rugged?

So what is Rugged?

What is a Rugged Device?

From a user’s perspective, a mobile device that is rugged is one that is able to withstand all kinds of working conditions. This means that the device can continue to operate even when exposed to tough conditions for the duration of its lifespan, which can be several years. However, a true business-rugged device is more than just reliable hardware.

The exact meaning of Windows and Android rugged devices may vary depending on the type of work being performed. For instance, a mobile device used by mobile workers in a warehouse is likely to be dropped frequently and may be exposed to a lot of dust, but may not need protection against extreme temperatures or rain.

On the other hand, a forester will require a device that is protected against water and has a wide temperature range but may not be too concerned about dust.

Overall, rugged mobile devices are designed to be tough and durable, able to withstand harsh environments and physical stresses. They offer greater protection and reliability than standard consumer-grade devices, making them ideal for use in a range of industries and work environments.

Are rugged devices the right tool for the job?

When it comes to using mobile devices for work, it’s important to find the right high-performance tool for the job. A knowledgeable buyer of fully rugged mobile devices will carefully assess the working conditions that the device will be subjected to and choose a rugged device that meets those requirements.

In fact, it’s a good idea to select a device that is more rugged than what is actually needed to ensure that it can withstand unexpected drops and knocks. Conker offers a range of business-rugged devices that can be tailored to meet your specific needs. With the NS6, which has a 6-inch screen, you can expect a lightweight, small, and versatile device that is perfect for a range of tasks.

Moreover, the NS6 comes with an optional barcode scanner that is particularly useful for businesses that need to capture, send, and store data regularly. To learn more about barcode scanners and the industries that they support, check out our informative blog.

Three Factors That Make a Device Rugged

The level of ruggedness of a rugged device is best defined by its environmental specifications. There are three common and useful specifications to consider:

The first is the temperature range, which defines the operational temperature range of the unit. Using a device above or below this range may cause it to fail. For instance, consumer devices may not work properly within commercial freezers for products.

The second specification is MIL-STD-810G, which consists of a series of environmental tests to prove that equipment qualified to the standard will survive in the field. Originally, this standard was used to test military equipment, but these days it is used to test a wide range of both military and civilian rugged devices, including mobile devices.

The third specification is the IP rating, which stands for Ingress Protection. This rating is used to specify the level of environmental protection of electrical equipment against solids and liquids. It tells us what size and amount of solids or liquids can get inside the fully rugged device’s enclosure and potentially cause damage.

Considering these specifications when purchasing rugged tablets or handhelds can help ensure that it can withstand the working conditions it will be exposed to, making it a more reliable tool for your business needs.

IP Definitions – What level do you need?

First digit

Protection against dust

Second digit

Protection against water

0: No protection   0: No protection
1: Protection against solids up to 50 mm   1: Protected against dripping water
2: Protection against solids up to 12 mm   2: Protected against dripping water (tilted)
3: Protection against solids up to 2.5 mm   3: Protected against water spray
4: Protection against solids up to 1 mm   4: Protected against splashing water
5: Protection against dust; limited ingress   5: Protected against water jets
6: Totally protected against dust   6: Protected against a nozzle under pressure
7: Protected against immersion (1 meter for 30 min)
8: Protected against submersion (at depth, under pressure)

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are displayed as a 2-digit number to indicate a rugged device’s level of protection against dust and liquids. The first digit represents the degree of protection against dust, while the second digit represents the degree of protection against water.

There are 7 levels of dust protection, ranging from level 0 to level 7, and 9 levels of water protection, ranging from level 0 to level 8.

However, most rugged devices that operate on either a Windows or Android Operating System have a minimum dust protection level of 5 and a minimum water protection level of 4. The levels of protection can have a significant impact on the device’s performance, especially at the extreme ends of the scale.

For example, a device with a dust protection level of 5 may still allow some dust to enter, whereas a device with a dust protection level of 6 is completely dustproof. Similarly, a device with a water protection level of 4 can withstand splashes of water, but a device with a water protection level of 8 can withstand immersion in water for extended periods.

An IP67-rated device is completely dustproof and can withstand immersion in water for at least 30 minutes to a depth of 1 metre.

This type of device would be ideal for use in very dusty or dirty environments or in situations where the device may accidentally fall into a body of water, such as a lake or stream. On the other hand, an IP54 rating only provides limited protection against dust and water and should not be fully immersed.

Manufacturers of business-rugged devices are increasingly using the term IP68, which can be confusing without additional information. While IP67 already offers strong protection against water immersion, IP68 can offer even greater protection.

However, it is important to consider the specific details of the device’s IP68 rating before making a decision. If the 1-metre for 30 minutes mark of IP67 is not enough for your needs, it is important to compare the specifics of a device that promises IP68.

If you want to learn more about rugged IP ratings, you can find additional information by following the link provided.

Rugged Devices For Tough Environments

Having a good understanding of a rugged device’s specifications and what they mean can be highly beneficial in assessing the device’s suitability for your needs, both in terms of how well it will perform in the field and how long it will last.

For example, the device’s IP rating (Ingress Protection rating) can give you a good idea of how well it can resist dust and water ingress. This is especially important if you work in environments that are particularly dusty or prone to water exposure. The higher the IP rating, the greater the protection the device offers against these elements.

Other specifications to consider include the device’s drop resistance, which can help you gauge its durability and resilience to physical impacts. The battery life and charging time can also be important factors to consider, especially if you work in remote locations where power outlets may not be readily available.

Additionally, the processor speed and RAM can affect the device’s overall performance, which may be important if you need to run multiple applications or perform complex tasks on the device. The display size, resolution, and brightness can also impact the device’s usability and visibility, especially if you need to use it outdoors or in bright sunlight.

4 Tips to Kick Start Productivity

4 Tips to Kick Start Productivity in the Construction Industry

“Action is the foundational key to all success.”

– Picasso

Achieving a greater level of 4 Tips to Kick Start Productivity in the workplace is something that all companies across a multitude of industries strive for.

But what if your company is in the UK Construction industry that has had for many years, and still remains to have a stagnant productivity growth rate?

With an estimated productivity gap of £15bn, it can often seem daunting for Management in Construction, who are trying to improve levels of productivity whilst maintaining staff morale - particularly given the political uncertainty and increased skills shortages in the UK - remains a daunting challenge to tackle.

If you’re experiencing productivity issues or feel like you are falling behind, then here we share tips to help replenish your faith in boosting productivity in your workplace.

Update in 2021:

In 2021, the entire world completely changed the way construction works, it becomes more crucial to equip your workers with the right tools. As the COVID-19 closures have affected this industry, how can you help your organization feel successful and accomplished even with these challenges? Using rugged devices can improve the overall delivery of services for the construction sector.

1. Technology is fundamental, but…

In a survey carried out by AIM, 62% of employers asked said that technology enabled them to “produce more goods or provide more services than a decade ago with the same or fewer employees”. Of the companies that could quantify the gains that had been made, many said their productivity was boosted by between 10 and 25%. One manufacturer said it had become twice as productive without taking on extra staff. Meanwhile, a not-for-profit company saw its productivity rates treble.

So why is Construction not keeping pace with other industries?

The answer lies not necessarily in technology, but in its Enablement, or in Construction’s case, the lack thereof.

2. Enable your workforce

Construction is notorious for its downtime. Downtime can be attributed to dozens of reasons. For example, waiting for skilled workers to arrive on-site, finding/misplacing timesheets, manually inputting data or giving adequate training to people entering a site (issuing Safety Regulations is a must). Tools not working the way they are supposed to work are also notoriously responsible for causing downtime. Innovation in technology such as AR, VR, BIM and AI now allows you to minimise all of the above downtime tasks. But the key here is Enablement

Enable your workforce, put the power in the hands of the individuals. You can enable one manager to become efficient by harnessing technology. But if you enabled an entire workforce, imagine the productivity benefits you could reap!

Let the carpenters be carpenters, allow the electricians to be electricians - utilise their time properly. And in the meantime, enable other individuals, upskill them so that their downtime can be filled with productivity, whether that is carrying out training on tablets, or filling in forms via a mobile device.

So yes, technology is fundamental but its Enablement is the key to unlocking productivity.

3. Be disruptive

“My advice to the construction industry is, disrupt yourselves before you get disrupted.”

- Bent Flyvbjerg

Be the change you wish to see in the Construction industry. Go against the grain by enabling your workforce, and by doing so, you create a portal to productivity and subsequently become the pioneering company to begin closing the productivity gap.

For companies that can disrupt with genuine innovation in technology (amongst other areas), the outcome could be as large as a 50-60% increase in productivity, the benefit of which is substantial profitability.

But, in order to leverage Enablement for better productivity, you must have the correct tool.

4. Find the right tool for the toolbag

Perhaps the most important factor in enabling your workforce is choosing the right technology. So many companies suffer from a lack of efficiency, productivity and profitability as an incidental result of being mismatched with the wrong tech.

This is why it is paramount particularly for companies in Construction to be partnered with the right tech. At Conker we take a consultative approach (something our clients tell us they love) that finds our customers tablets and mobile devices that are fit for purpose. They are robust enough to withstand the rigours of the Construction site, powered to last the entire working day, all whilst supporting the software you depend on.

As standard, we find out the end-users requirements, what environment the devices will be used in,  what success might look like for your company, and match your devices accordingly.

The right tech matched especially to your business requirements is the most important tool in your toolbag.
