Is Windows CE Still Supported in 2023

Windows CE systems have dominated the mobility market for decades. Companies across different industries rely on this operating system to improve their operations. Recently, however, Microsoft stopped developing more updates for this system.

Windows Embedded Compact (previously known as Windows CE) is a real-time operating system developed by Microsoft for small, resource-constrained devices such as handheld computers, industrial controllers, and embedded systems. It is a modular, component-based operating system designed to be customizable, allowing developers to create tailored solutions for specific hardware configurations and use cases.

Windows Embedded Compact provides a variety of features, including a small footprint, support for various processor architectures, real-time capabilities, and a range of connectivity options. It also includes development tools and APIs to simplify the creation of custom applications and services.

According to Microsoft windows developers, it will cease all platforms that support Windows CE. As a result, Windows CE 6.0 end of life happened in 2018, and on January 14, 2020, Windows Mobile 6.5 end-of-life occurred. This means companies who are still using Windows CE will see an end to security updates and patches.

Old Windows CE Devices

A Quick Review On Windows CE

Windows CE is a core operating system developed by Microsoft that is designed for minimalistic devices such as smartphones, handheld computers, and other embedded systems. The first version, Windows CE 1.0, was released in 1996. Microsoft licenses Windows CE to hardware manufacturers who can then develop devices that meet the minimum hardware specifications required to run the operating system. Developers can use Windows Phone Developer Tools and a Windows CE Software Development Kit to create Windows CE apps that can run on devices. Windows CE allows developers to create their own user interfaces and tailor the user experience to their needs.

Why Migrate from Microsoft Windows CE OS To Another Operating System?

Migrating your Windows CE OS to a completely different OS which will ensure that your business gets the support that it needs. However, if you are using legacy software with native applications, you may be forced to try other operating systems that work with Rugged Tablets and PDAs. You may also want to consider migrating to an open-source operating system such as Android, Linux, or even iOS that offers greater flexibility, scalability, and potential for customizations.

The Business Risk of Sticking With Windows CE Kernel

Sticking with Windows CE can pose a significant risk to businesses that rely on the operating system for their mobility needs. With Microsoft ending support for Windows CE, companies that continue to use the operating system will no longer receive security updates and patches, leaving them vulnerable to cyber threats.

This is especially concerning for businesses that operate in industries that require high levels of security, such as healthcare and finance. Hackers can easily exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software, exposing sensitive data and putting patients and customers at risk.

Another risk will be for businesses that require high productivity and efficiency. Without access to the latest features and updates and only following minimum hardware specifications, businesses may experience slower performance, increased downtime, and difficulty integrating with new technologies.

What Are The Benefits Of Upgrading To Another Operating System?

Upgrading from Windows CE to another operating system can provide a wide range of benefits. Upgrading to a higher version of Windows can help increase the performance, security, and stability of your system. It can also offer new features that weren’t available on the old OS. Additionally, upgrading to an open-source OS may provide access to more apps and greater flexibility in terms of customizations and scalability.

End of Life of Windows CE

An End-of-Life status indicates that a mobile device will no longer receive security and software patch updates. It does not mean that the device will stop working it simply means users will have to use legacy software to continue running. As mentioned above, companies that will continue to use legacy operating systems will be vulnerable to bugs and defenseless against viruses.

Windows CE Migration Hurdles

Migrating from Windows CE to a newer operating system can be a challenging process for businesses, particularly those that rely on legacy software and hardware designed to support the WinCE system. One of the biggest challenges faced by businesses is compatibility. Many companies are still using older Windows Mobile devices that only support Windows CE, making it difficult to migrate to a newer operating system without replacing the entire device.

Another hurdle is data migration, which can involve data conversion, restructuring, or cleansing to ensure that all data is properly transferred to the new operating system without any loss. Additionally, some businesses may need to physically install a Windows CE port on their device to enable it to support other Microsoft operating systems.

Businesses must also consider the cost of migrating to a newer operating system, which can include purchasing new hardware and software licenses, investing in employee training and education, and upgrading existing systems. While migrating to a newer operating system can provide benefits such as improved security, performance, and compatibility, the cost must be carefully weighed against the benefits.

It’s worth noting that Windows CE conforms to a different set of standards compared to other operating systems by Microsoft, so it may require some modifications to ensure compatibility with newer systems. Nonetheless, upgrading from Windows CE to a newer operating system can provide significant benefits for businesses, including improved performance and access to a wider range of software applications.

One potential solution for businesses looking to upgrade from Windows CE is to consider rugged devices such as the Conker NS6, which runs on Windows Pro and provides a stable, reliable, and easy-to-use alternative to Windows CE. Regardless of the solution chosen, businesses must develop a comprehensive plan that addresses the unique challenges of migrating from Windows CE and provides the necessary support for a successful transition.

The end of life for Windows CE has become a serious worry for different industries. For example, in healthcare services – medical devices are widely used and rely on Windows CE. These medical devices run on software that is designed for collecting, storing, and transmitting data from one device to another. As these devices play a major role in patient care, it is crucial to find the right upgrade from Windows CE.

But why should EOL for Windows CE be a constant source of problems for your business when you have the option to upgrade your OS or device?

What are your options – The CONKER NS6

Rugged devices notably handhelds previously operated with the Windows CE operating system, Conker’s flagship 6-inch NS6 device combined with the updated Windows Pro operating system known for its stability, reliability, and ease of use, has filled the void previously occupied by now discontinued Windows CE rugged devices. When it comes to Android smartphones, several rugged devices are worth considering. These phones are built to withstand tough conditions and are perfect for people who work in challenging environments. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the top rugged Android smartphones that stood out in 2021 and what makes them unique.

These phones also often have high IP ratings, indicating that they can withstand being submerged in water for an extended period.

Additionally, the rear cameras on a rugged Android phone are often higher quality than those found on other rugged handsets, making them ideal for taking high-quality photos and videos in challenging environments. Is Modern Technology Too Fragile? Addressing the Issue with Conker Rugged Devices

Modern technology has revolutionized the way we live and work. From smartphones, laptops, and computers to advanced medical equipment, autonomous vehicles, and transportation systems, these are just a few examples of how technology has made our lives easier and more efficient. However, modern technology also comes with its own set of challenges, including fragility. In this blog, we will explore the concept of technology fragility, technological innovation, and how Conker's rugged devices provide a solution to this problem.

When most people think of technology fragility, the first thought that comes to mind is typically physical damage. This could mean a cracked screen on a phone or laptop or water damage due to exposure to rain or moisture. What many people don’t realise, however, is that there are other forms of fragility associated with modern technology. Just an example is that new technology can make other technologies vulnerable to cyber attacks and other forms of malicious software. This is especially true for businesses and organizations with large data stores that need to be protected from external threats. In addition, modern technology can be complex and time-consuming to maintain, making it difficult for users to remain up-to-date with the latest advancements.

We live in an increasingly mobile world, where people rely on their mobile devices to stay connected. Unfortunately, these devices are highly vulnerable to damage from drops, liquid spills, dust, extreme temperatures, and more. Not only can this kind of damage cause expensive repair charges or interfere with critical operations, but it can also be a substantial inconvenience. Conker's rugged devices address these issues by providing a durable and reliable technology solution that minimizes downtime and maximizes efficiency. With features like waterproofing, shock resistance, and long battery life, Conker's rugged devices are ideal for industries such as healthcare, transportation, and logistics. They are also rigorously tested to ensure that they can withstand tough conditions and provide optimal performance, even in the harshest environments.

The Fragility of Modern Technology

Research shows that the fragility of modern technology refers to its susceptibility to damage and breakdowns. Several factors contribute to this fragility, including complexity, vulnerability, and dependence.

Complexity: Modern technologies are often complex, with intricate components that can be difficult to repair or replace. This complexity makes it more susceptible to breakdowns and failures.

Vulnerability: Modern technology is vulnerable to damage from environmental factors such as water, dust, and extreme temperatures. This vulnerability can lead to damage and breakdowns that can be costly to repair.

Dependence: Society has become increasingly reliant on technological advancements, which means that a breakdown can have significant consequences. For example, a power outage can cause disruptions in communication, transportation, and healthcare.

The fragility of modern technology has a significant impact on society. A breakdown in new technologies can lead to lost productivity, lost revenue, and even public safety concerns. This highlights the need to address this issue and make modern technology more reliable.

Addressing the Fragility of Modern Technology

It is essential to address the issue of modern technology fragility. There are several ways to achieve this goal, including design, testing, maintenance, and backup systems.

Design: Emerging technology should be designed with durability in mind. Components should be made with materials that are resistant to damage from environmental factors such as water, dust, and extreme temperatures.

Testing: A device should undergo rigorous testing to ensure that they can withstand tough conditions. This testing should include simulated environmental conditions, such as exposure to water, dust, and extreme temperatures.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance can help to identify and address potential issues before they become more significant problems. Maintenance should include routine checks of components, cleaning, and replacement of parts as necessary.

Backup systems: Having backup systems in place can help to mitigate the impact of a technology breakdown. Backup systems should be designed to provide redundancy and ensure that critical functions can continue in the event of a breakdown.

What Does IP Rated Actually Mean

What Does IP Rated Actually Mean?

So, what does IP Rated actually mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, which literally translates as “protection against entrance”.

But in a technological context, Ingress Protection represents a particular classified manufacturing and sealing process that protects equipment against the intrusion of water and dust.

Each digit that is assigned to “IP” has its own individual representation – protections against solid objects and protection against liquids.

Why is IP technology necessary?

Dust, water and humidity intrusion can prove extremely detrimental to any type of equipment over time.

This is why for organizations that deal with tough conditions regularly (bad weather, extreme temperatures, or industrial settings), and also heavily rely on mobile tech in order to fulfil work productivity, Ingress Protection is absolutely crucial.

CONKER | Guide to IP Ratings for tablet devices
Rugged Windows Tablets

What Does IP Rated Actually Mean

Without such technology, we would see a frightfully high (and wasteful) turnover of commercial tablets, handhelds, PDAs, and smartphones that are used in work environments.

IP also includes shock and vibration tolerance, and can therefore survive being dropped (at Conker we drop test our Ingress Protection Rated devices from 1.2m-1.5m onto wooden flooring and concrete).

Plus extreme high and low temperatures and corrosive environments.

Below is a table that maps out what each IP code actually means. You may have seen IP65 or IP67 before – each of which has a very different type of ingress protection.

The two digits following “IP” are treated separately. Read on to find out more.

IP67 Testing a Rugged Windows Tablet - What it Means to be Rugged

When a device is described as "rugged," it typically means that the device is designed to withstand harsh conditions and environments that would damage or destroy ordinary consumer-grade devices.

A rugged windows tablet is built to be tougher and more durable than standard devices, often featuring reinforced casings, shock-absorbing materials, and water and dust resistance. These devices are also subjected to extensive testing to ensure they can withstand extreme temperatures, drops, vibrations, and other forms of physical stress.

In the case of rugged Windows tablets, the devices are designed to function reliably in challenging environments such as construction sites, outdoor locations, and industrial settings. They are tested to meet specific standards for durability, such as the MIL-STD-810G military standard for ruggedness, which covers a wide range of environmental conditions.

Overall, the term "rugged" describes a device that is built to withstand the rigors of demanding work environments and provide reliable performance in challenging conditions.

Drop Testing

Protection against drops is a major concern for businesses that purchase and own tablets. In fact, 21% of tablet failures are due to drops, and there are likely even more cases where tablets suffer minor damage from drops that are not reported as failures. Therefore, a rugged extreme tablet is tested to ensure it can withstand a minimum 1.2-meter drop, which is considered the benchmark for ruggedization. This means that the device can withstand a drop from an average person's holding height, which is the height at which they typically use the ruggedized tablets. However, smaller and lighter devices such as rugged handhelds can often withstand even higher drops.

To test a rugged Windows tablet, an elaborate machine is used that is dedicated to dropping things. The device is dropped multiple times on all sides, usually over 50 drops, to ensure that it still works and does not show any signs of damage such as cracks (although scuffs may be permitted). The drop test rig includes a shelf where the tablet is placed, and a remote button is pressed to release the tablet from the shelf at a set height. While the drop test rig may not be particularly fascinating in pictures, it is an important part of the testing process to ensure that rugged tablets can withstand the demands of challenging work environments.

Temperature and Humidity Testing

In addition to drop protection, another crucial aspect of ruggedization is the ability to withstand extreme environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures and humidity levels. While it may come as a surprise to some, 40% of tablet failures can be attributed to these factors. It is therefore essential that a rugged extreme tablet undergoes thorough testing to ensure that it can operate reliably in challenging work environments.

One significant advantage of a rugged Windows tablet over a consumer-grade devices with after-market cases is that rugged tablets are designed to withstand extreme environmental conditions from the outset. They are built with reinforced casings and other rugged features that can protect against exposure to high and low temperatures, as well as humidity levels that can damage non-rugged devices.

To test the resilience of the best rugged tablets to environmental extremes, special testing chambers are used. These chambers are designed to simulate the conditions that rugged tablets may encounter in the field, such as extreme heat or cold, high humidity, and even exposure to water or dust. The testing process is rigorous and involves exposing the tablet to these conditions for extended periods while monitoring its performance to ensure that it continues to operate reliably.

In conclusion, while being able to withstand drops is an important aspect of ruggedization, it is not the only factor to consider. Resilience to extreme environmental conditions is also a critical consideration when choosing a rugged tablet. By undergoing rigorous testing and being built with rugged features, rugged tablets can provide reliable performance in challenging work environments, helping businesses to increase productivity and reduce costly device failures.

IP65 Testing

At Tablet Technologies, we pride ourselves on the ruggedness of our devices. All of our tablets carry a minimum IP65 rating, while our latest Windows tablets and most Android tablets and handhelds offer an IP67 rating. However, we understand that these ratings may not always be easily understood by customers who are not familiar with mobile device ruggedisation.

To provide some clarity, IP65 testing involves a powder chamber test and a high-pressure water test. The powder test simulates exposure to dust and fine particles, while the water test involves using a water cannon to subject the device to high-pressure jets of water from all angles. These tests ensure that the device is completely sealed against dust and water ingress. After the powder test, the device may appear to be covered in a thick layer of snow, but it must still pass the water test with no evidence of water or powder inside the device.

In fact, to pass the IP65 or IP67 rating, the device must undergo a thorough inspection after testing. The device is opened up, and photos are taken to confirm that there is no evidence of water or dust ingress. This level of testing ensures that our rugged tablets can withstand even the toughest conditions and continue to operate reliably in challenging environments.

IP67 Testing++

To achieve an IP67 rating, a device must be able to withstand being submerged in water for a minimum of 30 minutes at a depth of at least 15cm. This test is typically conducted in a water tank with a depth of 1 metre, allowing objects as large as 85cm to be tested below the 15cm depth mark. This means that

our rugged tablets, which are generally only a few centimetres thick or less, are being tested at a depth of 1 metre. That's the equivalent of being submerged in a deep puddle!

Meeting the IP67 rating demonstrates that the best rugged tablets are completely sealed against water and dust ingress, making them ideal for use in a wide range of extreme environments, including construction sites, manufacturing facilities, and outdoor settings. In addition to drop protection and resilience to extreme temperatures and humidity, our rugged tablets can also withstand being exposed to water, whether it's a rain shower or accidental submersion. This level of durability ensures that our tablets can continue to operate reliably in the face of the toughest conditions.
